April is an important month in the NVee calendar. It’s when VApril kicks off, a month dedicated to helping smokers quit with the help of e-cigarettes.
Now in its fifth year, VApril is the largest campaign in the world devoted to helping smokers make the switch, and this year the campaign will be reaching out to vapers as well as smokers to advise those who want to quit.
One of the key messages that the 2022 VApril campaign is tackling is something we also care very deeply about at NVee, and that’s how much misinformation and fake news currently proliferates around the vaping industry.
A poll in 2019 revealed that 68% of vapers said they would never have given up smoking cigarettes without the help of e-cigarettes. Yet according to Public Health England, an estimated 40% of smokers still haven’t tried vaping, and that’s often due to false “facts”. It said: “Perceptions of harm from vaping among smokers are increasingly out of line with the evidence…misperceptions are particularly common among smokers who do not vape.”

We believe that this viral spread of false information has serious implications on the behaviours, attitudes and beliefs of the general public, which ultimately – in the case of vaping’s acknowledged role in helping smokers quit – could seriously endanger the nation’s health.
So VApril 2022 will focus on helping smokers and their loved ones break through the misinformation to get the facts and figures they need to make an informed decision that could literally change their lives.
SO HOW COULD VAPRIL HELP YOU QUIT SMOKING?

USEFUL FACTS AND FIGURES TO STRENGTHEN YOUR RESOLVE TO QUIT
- Is vaping safe? Public Health England in 2019 reported that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking
- Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that the number of smokers in the UK has been consistently falling since 2011
- It’s the thousands of chemicals in cigarettes that make them dangerous to our health, not the nicotine
- In the UK we have some of the world’s strictest regulations for e-cigarette product development, sales and use
- Unlike smoking, which is known to be dangerous to those around you, there have been no reported identified risks with “passive vaping”
- Vaping helped an extra 50-70,000 smokers in England to quit in just one year
- Ex-smokers report how much fitter they are – improvements that are backed up by the science. They find their chest is clearer and they can do more physical activities – and the benefits can be seen in just a month!
- It costs around 3.5 times more to smoke cigarettes than vape. How useful will those savings be?
- Think of the positives of giving up. What will it mean personally to your health, your pocket, your partner, your children? Make your own list then weigh up the pros and cons based on facts, not clickbait.
The VApril organisers are inviting committed vapers to submit their own stories about what inspired you to make the switch and what impact it’s had on your life. You can share your views via their Speak Up for Vaping page, and also via social media using the hashtag #SpeakUpVaping.
